Nicholas Biddle

Professor Nicholas Biddle, PELab Director (Australia)

Nicholas Biddle is the Head of the School of Politics and International Relations, having previously served as Deputy Director of the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods. He previously held a Senior Research Officer and Assistant Director position in the Methodology Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). He is a Fellow of the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute and a member of the Behavioural Economics Team for Australia (BETA) Academic Advisory Panel (Prime Minister and Cabinet) and the Australian Statistics Advisory Council of the ABS.

 

 

 

Mathias Sinning

Associate Professor Mathias Sinning, PELab Director (Asia and the Pacific)

Mathias Sinning is an Associate Professor of Economics at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute of the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy. He has published extensively in public economics, labour economics, health economics, development economics, and behavioural economics. He has been a Visiting Fellow at Princeton University and Peking University. He is a Research Fellow of RWI Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and IZA Institute of Labor Economics, and a Research Affiliate of MIT's Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).

 

 

 

 

Bob Breunig

Professor Robert Breunig

Robert Breunig directs the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy. He is a top Australian public policy economist, known for impactful research on topics like child care and women's labour supply, the effect of immigration on Australians' job prospects, and the effect of switching to cash from food stamps in the U.S. food stamp program. He collaborates widely with government agencies and enjoys simplifying economics for non-experts, helping to build research capacity in the Australian Public Service.

Ash Craig

Dr. Ashley Craig

Ashley Craig is a Senior Lecturer in Economics. His research spans Public Economics and Labor Economics, with a particular focus on human capital investment, taxation, and inequality. This includes experimental work, as well as other applied and theoretical research. He is affiliated with the University of Michigan Office of Tax Policy Research, the Institute of Labor Economics and the ANU Tax and Transfer Policy Institute. Ashley received his PhD from Harvard University in May 2019, and his undergraduate degree from the University of Sydney.

Ryan Edwards

Dr. Ryan Edwards

Ryan Edwards is the Deputy Director of the Development Policy Centre, a Fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy, and the labour mobility thematic lead of the Australian Government's Pacific Research Program. His research lies at the intersection of development economics, labour economics, international trade, and the environment. He has conducted a large-scale policy experiment on Indonesia's forest frontier and has several other collaborative field experiments underway. He previously held appointments at Dartmouth College and Stanford University, and in the Australian Government.

Dr. Maria Jahromi

Maria Jahromi is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at ANU POLIS: The Centre for Social Policy Research. She is the recipient of multiple scholarships, grants, and awards, including the Australian Securities Exchange Prize. Her PhD focused on Islamic finance and her other recent research interests include economics of education, economic sanctions, and the impacts of financial crises and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her research has significant policy relevance, especially highlighting the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable groups.

Associate Professor Firman Witoelar Kartaadipoetra

Firman Witoelar Kartaadipoetra is an Associate Professor with the ANU Indonesia Project, Arndt-Corden Economic Department, Crawford School of Public Policy. His research interest is in the broad area of development microeconomics, including long term dynamics of human capital formation, health behaviour and outcomes, survey methodology, and impact evaluation. Firman is a faculty affiliate at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and at CPC Learning Network, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University.

Dinith Marasinghe

Dinith is a researcher at POLIS: Centre for Social Policy Research of the ANU. Dinith has a Bachelor of Economics from UNSW and a Master of Economics from the ANU. His research interests include applied econometrics, computational economics, health economics and public economics.  

Nurina Merdikawati

Dr. Nurina Merdikawati

Nurina Merdikawati (Dika) is an applied economist specialising in Development, Gender, and Labour. She is a Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Women's Leadership (GIWL). Previously, Dika was a J-PAL postdoctoral research fellow, securing funding to manage three pilot RCTs on enhancing women’s economic participation and digital financial service access in Indonesia. She also conducted impact evaluation training for researchers and local officials. Dika holds a PhD in Economics from the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy, an MPP from the NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, and a BA (Hons) in Economics from Nanyang Technological University.

Ralf Steinhauser

Dr. Ralf Steinhauser

Ralf Steinhauser is a distinguished Senior Research Fellow at ANU POLIS: The Centre for Social Policy Research and a Fellow at the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute. His expertise spans behavioural and environmental economics, tax policy, and advanced data analysis. His work has significantly advanced the fields of carbon emissions forecasting, consumer behaviour, corporate governance, and taxation. Renowned for his analytical prowess in handling large datasets and experimental design, Dr. Steinhauser has contributed to impactful economic policy decisions across diverse areas, including tax elasticities and road safety.
